長良川母情①(2008.1月新聞掲載)

三和土(たたき)でけたたましい音を上げる、母の下駄の音にぼくの初夢はついえた。

せっかくあと一息で、あこがれだった「お子様ランチ」のエビフライに、噛り付けたというのに。

デパートのショーウィンドー越しに、母の目を盗んでこっそり眺めるだけで、未知の味を想像し口中に唾があふれ出すほどに馨(かぐわ)しかった「お子様ランチ」。

楕円状になった銀のトレーの上に、こんもり丸く盛り上がったご飯。

その頂に翻る爪楊枝の日の丸は、机の引き出しの中で宝物の一つとなるはずだったのに。

母の下駄の音は、テレビドラマが佳境に至る寸前、決まって突如割って入る無粋なCMそのもの。

情緒もへったくれもなく、超現実の現(うつつ)へと連れ戻されてしまった。

あまりの口惜しさにたまらず、布団の中の身体も震え出したようだ。

「正月だと思って、いつまでいい気になって寝とるつもりやぁ！」。

元日から母のおぞましい怒りの声が間近に迫る。

と同時に、既に掛け布団は引っぺがされていた。

「雑煮が伸びてまうで、早よせんと知らんでねっ！」。

寝ぼけ眼をうっすら開けば、オタマ片手に母が仁王立ち。

一張羅の着物の上に、すっかり黄ばんだ割烹着。

年末に美容院でアップに結った髪を、日本手ぬぐいのほっかぶりで覆い、こめかみには四角く切った小さなトクホンが。

今思えばその何とも不思議な出で立ちが、ぼくにとって紛れもない昭和三十年代終盤の母の残像だ。

母がこの世を去ってはや十五年。

既にぼく自身、とうに当時の母の齢(よわい)を超えた。

だからなのか、無性にあのころの正月が懐かしい。

今風の見てくれの良さなどみじんも無い。

煮物に金時、田作りと昆布にかまぼこ、焦げ色の付いたちょっといびつなだし巻き卵とくず数の子。

大人になるまでぼくは、数の子の本当の姿を知らずにいた。

だから大人になってすし屋で一腹もんの数の子を見た時、「それは同じカズノコと言う名の別の食べ物だ」と自信満々に言い放ってしまい、周りの同僚たちがたまらず腹を抱え笑い転げたものだ。

だがやっぱりぼくにとっての数の子は、あのくず数の子でなければならないのだ。

母は貧乏な家計をやりくりし、そこそこに折り合いを付けながら、精いっぱいの思いを込め正月を迎えさせようとしたのだろう。

新年を寿(ことほ)ぐため最低限のおせちを整え、ぼくが箸を付ける度に古人の言い伝えを語った母。

自分のことはいつでも何でも後回し。

元日の朝、父とぼくの枕元には、真新しい下着と新品の服が用意されていた。

でもそういえば母の晴れ着は、ぼくが大人になってからも毎年同じだった気がする。

また一つ齢を重ねる新年。

そのたび、母恋しさがまた一つ深まる。

出来ることなら戻りたいあのころへ。

そしてもう一度会いたい、あのころの若き日の母に。

  1. 子供の頃、昭和30年代
    岐阜、柳ケ瀬の丸物百貨店で一回だけ「お子様ランチ」を食べました。
    日の丸の旗が立っていた、美味しかったな～ぁ⤴
    初めて食べる物ばかりで・・
    誰か？が言ってた！

    1. 当時の子どもにとって「お子様ランチ」は、他に比べようのないほど夢一杯の贅沢な食事でしたよねぇ。
      「食べる宝石箱」かぁ！
      流石に上手い事いたものですねぇ。
      ぼくなんて目の前にお子様ランチが運ばれて来た瞬間は、銀色のトレーの上の料理になかなかもったいなくって手が付けられなかったものでした。

  2. 子供の頃、家の斜め向かいにお風呂屋さんがあり、お正月になると朝風呂をやってたいのです。朝寝坊の兄が祖父と朝風呂に行く約束をしてたのに、朝起きられず祖父に叩き起こされていたのを笑って見てました。

  3. うちもお正月の朝は　早く起こされて「手伝いなさい！」でした。
    小学生の頃は　近くに住む大家さんに挨拶に行きお年玉を頂いて　帰りの車内で母親に没収されてた記憶が…。
    妹と羽付きをしたり双六で遊んだり　父親が作ってくれた凧を上げたり。
    でも冬休みの宿題があったので　束の間のお正月気分を味わった後は　書道の練習ばかりしてましたよ( ◠‿◠ )

  4. 母が作ったおせち料理は、煮物が多く瀟洒なお料理はなかったような気がします。クワイの煮物、栗きんとん、海老の塩焼きなどなど。しかし、お雑煮はとても好きでした。四角い餅を10個以上食べました、中学生の頃は。オカダさんと同じ感覚です。あの頃に戻りたい、貧しくとも一家団欒の頃に。

    1. 今でも無性に何も入っていないお醤油味の雑煮を食べたくなる時があります。
      そんな時のために、切り餅を冷凍庫で保存しています。
      お母ちゃんの味が恋しくてたまらなくなったら、いつでも食べられるようにと。

  5. 母は４年以上前から特養にてお世話になっています。胃ろうをつけていただき生きながらえてくれています。口から食べられなくなった時、付ける手術をお願いしました。私のエゴでした。しかしいまでも、消極的に正解だと思っています。母親がどんな形であれ、生きていてくれることはほんとうにありがたいことと思っています。
    妹も同じ考えです。
